Why I Explain This With a Slinky

Hand a parent one of these training cards for the first time and watch what happens. They flip it over, scan the boxes, and say something like "oh, it's like a worksheet." Seven rotations down the middle, four columns across each one, a spot at the top for today's intention and a spot at the bottom for tomorrow's. It looks exactly like what it is on paper: a form. What it's actually doing is a different thing, and I've never found a way to explain it to a nine year old that works better than a slinky.
Everybody's held a slinky. You stretch it out, let go, and it walks itself back toward you, except it never lands in the exact spot it started from, it's further down the stairs, or the table, or wherever you're demonstrating it. That's the image I use for what we're actually asking a kid to do with this card, over and over, all day: this isn't just a loop, it's a recursive loop, meaning each pass through it is supposed to leave you a little further along than the last one. A regular loop just repeats. This one is supposed to compound.
Look at what the card actually asks for, in order. Before training starts, three questions: what am I focusing on today, what's going to tell me I'm drifting, and what's my reset cue if I need to bring myself back. That's the whole loop, stated in advance, before a single ball gets hit. Then the card doesn't ask those questions once. It asks a version of them seven times, once per rotation, because the card has seven stations built into it, point situations, ball machine work, serves and returns, and so on, and at every single one there's a column that says did I notice drift, and next to it, what helped me reset. A kid moving through a normal training day runs the exact same debrief in miniature seven separate times before lunch. That repetition is the whole design. Nobody learns to catch drift by hearing about it once. They learn it by practicing the catch enough times in one session that it stops requiring a coach standing over them asking the question for them.
There's a rule that goes with the card, simple enough that a kid can actually follow it: check your card on the way to each rotation. Not after. On the way. You look at what you wrote down before you get to the next station, so the intention is loaded before the ball starts coming, not reconstructed afterward from memory. That single habit, repeated seven times a day, is doing more work than anything printed on the card itself.
Then there's the box at the very bottom, the one that says look ahead, one thing I want to focus on tomorrow. That's the part that actually makes the loop recursive instead of just repetitive. Without it, a kid could run a flawless version of this card every single day and still start each morning from zero, because nothing connects Tuesday to Wednesday. With it, today's top box is supposed to match yesterday's bottom box. I check this on purpose, at random, by pulling a handful of yesterday's cards and comparing them to what got written down that morning. I don't do it every day, and I don't tell them which days I'll do it. The point isn't the check itself. The point is that a kid who knows the check might happen starts treating yesterday's look ahead like it actually matters, instead of like a box you fill in because the sheet has a box there.
The match card is the same architecture running at a different speed. Instead of seven rotations, there's one reset check, done at the changeover instead of between stations, because a match doesn't hand you seven natural stopping points, it hands you the walk between points and the sit-down every two games. Instead of a reset cue you write fresh every morning, there's a focus cue you're supposed to already know cold before you ever walk on court. And instead of a look ahead box at the bottom, the back of the card does the same job once the match is over: what was I trying to do, when did it work, when did it break down, what kept happening, and then keep and change, which is evolution wearing a shorter name. Same four stages, same order, built for a different clock.
None of this needed a nine year old to know the word intention or the word evolution. It needed a slinky, a habit of checking the card on the way to the next station, and someone occasionally pulling yesterday's card to see if it actually connected to today's, and the theory sits underneath all of it without the kid ever needing to see it in order to run it correctly.
